What Is This About?

What is this blog all about?

This is sort of a dry run to gauge interest, starting small with a focus on Florida to see how it takes off, if it even does. If this idea starts to grow then perhaps we will increase it to a national scope and spend a little change in doing so.

So what is it?

Basically this is another attempted scratching of an itch that has been gnawing at me for several years now.  Recently Discovery Channel began airing a series called Yukon Men.  Interestingly I didn't care much for it the first time I watched it.  As I continued to watch the show I began to fall in love with their way of life.  Their way of life resonated with that little voice in my head that was always saying "this is the way, this is the way".

The show documents a style of living called subsistence living.  In the lower 48 that tends to have a negative connotation.  In Alaska amongst the Eskimo, Aleut, Athabascan, Tlingit, and other tribes it is very much a traditional and cultural source of pride.  It is an identifier into who they are as much as it is a way to survive.  It runs deep.

When I compared how they live and the things that I have run with my own helter skelter and seemingly superfluous life I had to say they won.  It was freedom, know-how, and independence versus to corporate servitude, dependency, and inability.

So, basically this blog (and associated forum) is to develop the attraction to that lifestyle, perhaps test the feasibility and requirements of it, and see what can be learned from others.

Myself and others I hope will post here from time to time and we have also created a related forum, which is found here, please stop by and contribute what you can.
